Low wellbeing in the UK – trends, drivers and solutions

How is the UK doing? The simplest way to understand this is to ask its people how they are doing. And happily, that is something that has been happening for more than a decade. Since 2011, the Office for National Statistics has systematically been asking the nation’s citizens to report on how they are feeling and functioning, incorporating simple standardised questions into a wide range of its key national surveys. By providing an overall sense of how people are feeling and functioning, wellbeing measurement is a valuable tool for understanding the quality of life experienced in the UK and who is struggling the most.

A new report from Pro Bono Economics uses this measurement to assess the 3.2 million adults struggling with “wellbeing poverty” today. This research takes an in-depth look at the factors causing people to experience such a low quality of life and the policy levers that can be pulled to address these challenges.

Join Pro Bono Economics for this close analysis of key findings from the report, including an overview of the latest trends in wellbeing, an analysis of groups who are struggling the most and an exploration of important drivers of low quality of life.

An expert panel will then take an in-depth look at how loneliness could form an overlooked piece of the puzzle to reduce levels of low wellbeing in the UK, and what could be done to address this.
